For Ion and Diana Postolachi, dance has always been about connection and community.

Originally from Moldova, the couple grew up with a passion for dance and a dream of sharing it with others. They began as dance instructors before bringing their passion to Sussex County.

“After we discovered this area, we said, why not share our love of dance in the Cape region?” Ion said.

Diana said the couple chose to settle in Sussex County because they fell in love with the beach.

Gold Ballroom Dance Studio opened five years ago and recently celebrated its anniversary on July 19.

From the beginning, Ion and Diana wanted Gold Ballroom to be a place where anyone could experience the benefits of dance.

“It’s great for coordination, socializing, and keeping your brain and body active,” he said.

As a family-owned and locally owned business, Gold Ballroom focuses on creating a welcoming experience.

“We’re not a franchise or a corporation,” Ion said. “It’s me and my wife, our staff, our instructors, and our daughter.”

Ion said that personal approach shapes everything the studio does.

“The quality of dancing, services, and lessons is our number one priority,” Ion said. “Everybody is welcome, even people with two left feet who have never danced before. We make it fun so everyone can grow with us.”

Running an independent business comes with challenges, but Ion said that’s part of what makes the studio unique.

“We don’t have people giving us solutions to every problem, so we have to figure it out ourselves,” he said. “But that’s what makes us different, and we always find a solution.”

The couple has seen firsthand how dance can improve students’ lives, with many experiencing benefits such as improved posture and memory.

For many students, Gold Ballroom has become a place to build friendships.

“Our students are basically our family,” Ion said. “We encourage them and they encourage us too.”

As Sussex County grows, Gold Ballroom has evolved into a place where residents can meet others and discover a new hobby.

“We are always happy to welcome new students into our community,” Diana said.

Ion said dance has even influenced some people’s decisions about moving to the area.

“Some of them actually decide to move to this area because they see a ballroom dance studio here,” he said. “They will say, ‘If there is no ballroom dancing, I don’t want to move there,’ because I want to continue my passion.”

Beyond classes, Gold Ballroom builds community through social events, fundraisers and outreach.

“One of our goals is to create a community of people who love to dance,” Diana said.

“Especially for people who just moved here, this is a great place to make new connections,” Ion said. “We have social dance parties, where people can meet, dance, and make new friends.”

Gold Ballroom also provides students with opportunities to travel and compete.

“We compete nationally and internationally, traveling with our students to competitions,” Diana said.

Gold Ballroom offers instruction in ballroom, Latin and social dances, including salsa, bachata, West Coast swing and Argentine tango, welcoming dancers of all ages and experience levels, including some students in their 80s.

Gold Ballroom is also working on growing its youth programs, with the goal of building future champions.

“And it’s an activity for the boys too, not just for the girls,” Ion added. “So boys, don’t be afraid! It’s very cool to be a dancer!”

For those interested in trying dance for the first time, Gold Ballroom offers an introductory experience.

“Even if you have never danced before or don’t have a partner, that’s perfect. This is the right place to start,” Ion said.

For Ion and Diana, the goal isn’t just to teach people how to dance — it’s to create an experience that makes them excited to return. When asked how they want every student to leave the studio feeling, Ion said, “I cannot wait to go back.”

“We want to make sure that they go home with a smile,” Diana said.

For Ion and Diana, Gold Ballroom is more than a dance studio. It’s a place where people can move, connect, and create memories that last a lifetime.
